My parents invited us to join them in Colorado for an escape from the Texas heat. We left early in the morning - Doug and me in our grey Ford Fusion, my parents in their silver Acura SUV, and Sydney floating between cars.
Jenson went on this family vacation last year. Little did we know, it would be his last trip. Looking at the empty space where his carseat used to be brought on waves of pain.
We made it to our stopping point 10 hours into the drive around 6pm. Starving, we decided to check out a local wood-fired pizza restaurant in Trinidad, CO. The five of us piled into the Ford Fusion. The engine worked hard as the car climbed up the hill to the higher altitude. As we reached the top of the hill, Sydney excitedly said "It's a rainbow!".
Sydney pointed to the vibrant rainbow. We all looked out surprised to see a bright rainbow on a day with only spotty clouds.
Flashbacks of Jenson filled my mind. He used to love to go to Grandma and Grandpa Jo's house and watch his favorite video on the i-Pad. He would pull up YouTube and with a big smile on his face find his favorite video - "The Rainbow Colors Song". He knew all the words and as he sang it he would put special emphasis on the word "pink" (likely to tease his daddy who was horrified when a year ago Jenson said his favorite color was pink). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRNy2i75tCc
As we admired the beautiful rainbow, I began singing "The Rainbow Colors Song". Everyone joined in. We sang the last word of the song and at that EXACT moment the bright rainbow disappeared. We all smiled - Jenson was a part of our family trip.
It's a rainbow. It's a rainbow. A beautiful rainbow in the sky.
