Stay the course or add more toxic chemo drugs?

Jenson got another round of chemo today. He's currently on vinblastine and prednisone as his main chemotherapy drugs. We also met with the oncologist to talk about the future (and he was much nicer today).

We're at the stage where we have to figure out whether we keep Jenson on the chemo treatment he's been on or whether we need to change the treatment up and add more toxic drugs to the mix to try to get his body to respond.

The oncologist recommends we go ahead with the GI biopsy on Oct 11. If it looks the same or worse, we would definitely need to change things up and add other chemo drugs to the mix. If it's better or gone in his GI tract, we may be able to continue with the chemo treatment we've been doing plus a topical solution for his head.

His recommendation makes sense. Doesn't make it any easier though. So best case after the GI scope is he remains on his current chemo treatment schedule. Worse case, we have to add stronger chemo drugs to the mix. Depending on what is added, the potential risk of long terms side effects includes things such as liver damage, kidney damage, seizures, or additional neurocognitive/development issues. That's not to say Jenson would get all those, but it certainly puts the magnitude of the change in perspective.

The oncologist also said to Jenson "You look good little buddy. That's what makes this disease so challenging". Man is he right. Looking good on the surface doesn't mean you're healthy and this disease is definitely the most challenging thing we've ever faced in our lives. Thankfully Jenson is a fighter.

Please pray for wisdom for us and our doctors. For perseverance to make it through.

Setbacks can be setups for new possibilities. We're certainly praying for that right now!
